Helping Someone Else Quit Smoking In 5 Easy Steps

urself then you know how addictive smoking is and how hard it is to quit. If you don't smoke, then understanding that the addictive properties of nicotine are extremely powerful will be important in helping them quit. Here are some points of note when helping someone else quit smoking.
1) Don't force the issue. Constantly nagging at someone and telling them they should quit will rarely work. They need to come to the conclusion that they want to quit by themselves. And when they do make that decision, you need to be there with words of encouragement that will convince them they are doing the right thing.
2) Make yourself available. Just being there to listen can be a huge help psychologically. They are going to need to take their mind off smoking, especially if they are going cold turkey. Being available to chat on the phone or meet up for a coffee will help them fill the void left by smoking.
3) Offer a helping hand. Just because someone made the decision to quit, it doesn't mean they actually have a plan on how to do it. It is also important not to appear too disappointed if they do suffer a relapse, rather affirm your support for them becoming a non-smoker.
No-one should be left to go it alone when they try to quit smoking, as this is a sure-fire recipe for failure. The physical and psychological effects of quitting are numerous and strong, and hard to deal with without support. Simply by being available to offer support, encouragement and a means to take their mind off smoking, you will be giving them a huge helping hand on their way to a new smoke free life.

Just Say No To Big Tobacco Co.

This song was inspired by members of 'Tobacco Fighters and Survivors Club,' a Smoking Reduction and Cessation Group for people living with mental illnesses, which I run. I am a registered nurse. I wrote the song in the hope that it might spark people to look at and express their smoking stories in new and creative ways, using any kind of art form they are personally drawn to, whether it be music, writing, visual arts, drama, comedy, dance, etc. I like to think that the process of looking at and telling a story has potential to lead us humans in new directions. The music video is a collaborative project between myself and the group members, with the small required budget provided by my employer, The Vancouver Island Health Authority. The song was inspired by the poignant smoking stories I hear every week from people who are often angry with themselves for smoking. Approximately 75% of people living with schizophrenia smoke, and people living with mental illnesses in general tend to smoke at more than double the rate of the general population, so these people are disproportionately impacted by the negative consequences (physical, financial, emotional, and social) of smoking. I myself smoked heavily from the ages of 12 to 31, so I know the addiction well. Quitting smoking was one of the most difficult but most self affirming things I have ever done, and I hope this song and video will be helpful to other people. Champix is licensed for use as a prescription only medicine for smoking cessation. By far, it is one of the most successful drugs available for smoking cessation. Champix varenicline makes this possible by blocking the nicotine from acting on its receptors in the brain. Even if a person smokes during the course of the treatment, he/she will not derive the same pleasure from smoking and will therefore have no desire to smoke again. This feature of Champix helps people in succeeding in their quit smoking mission.

Dosages of Champix

Champix treatment is usually recommended for a 12-week period. However, your doctor may suggest that you begin the treatment a week in advance of your quit date. During this week, you will be asked to take lower strength dosages (0.5mg) of Champix - once a day for 3 days and twice a day for the next 4 days. This is done to help your body get adjusted to the medicine; you may continue to smoke during this week. Following this week, you'll need to take Champix 1mg tablet twice a day for 12-weeks. You need to take the medicine with a full glass of water at the same time each day, preferably after meals.

Side effects of Champix

Like most other prescription medications, Champix varenicline is associated with certain side effects. However, most side effects of Champix are mild to moderate and may not affect all individuals. Common side effects of Champix include nausea, headache, difficulty sleeping and abnormal dreams. Other less common Champix side effects include sleepiness or fatigue; dizziness; change in taste and dry mouth; disturbances of the gut such as constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort or bloating; indigestion, wind or increased appetite.

In rare cases, Champix is reported to have caused changes in behaviour, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts. Inform your doctor if you experience any of these rare Champix side effects or if any of its side effects become bothersome.
