Cancer-stricken Higgins urged by friends to dodge cameras at funeral CANCER-STRICKEN Alex Higgins has been urged by friends not to attend the funeral of his old boozing buddy Oliver Reed. They fear people would be shocked at the decline of the one-time hellraiser and former world snooker champion. Alex, 49, is clinging to life after undergoing major surgery last October to remove the cancer which had eaten away at his throat. He was devastated when he learned of Reed's death and has made countless phone calls to friends of the actor in Churchtown, Co Cork, to express his grief. The man known as 'Hurricane' first met Ollie in a British Legion club where wildman Reed challenged him to a game of snooker. The snooker match quickly turned into a boozing session and was the start of a life-long friendship between the pair who once made a record together - appropriately entitled Wild Thing. Alex, who blew his £3 million earnings from snooker on booze, women and bad bets, has been living on handouts since his career nose-dived six years ago.
