The Smoking Ban - One Year On

On 1st July 2008, it'll be exactly a year since England introduced new legislation to make virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces smoke free. The move was designed to have a positive impact on our health, and it seems to have worked. Latest figures show there were 1384 fewer heart attacks across the country in the nine months after the legislation was introduced compared with the same period the year before. However, at the moment around quarter of British adults still smoke - which works out at around 10 million people. Just under half of them have tried to quit since the smoking ban came in. This video explores the benefits of the ban to the smoker and the pub goer, and also touches on the importance of 'emotional help' when it comes to quitting.

Ex Smokers Reduce the Risk of Lung Cancer - Quit Smoking Today

Further evidence that, from a health standpoint, it is never too late to quit cigarette smoking was presented by a New Jersey pathologist who found that in former smokers, the cells that line the bronchial tubes - where smoking-caused lung Cancers arise - recover from smoking-inflicted damage. The pathologist, Dr. Oscar Auerbach of the Veterans Administration Hospital in East Orange, said that "persons who have smoked cigarettes for many years some times express the opinion that the harm has already been done and that they might as well continue smoking. The evidence is completely contrary to that point of view," said Dr. Auerbach, who was a member of the research team that found the first evidence in experimental animals - beagles - that cigarette smoking causes lung Cancer. "cigarette smokers who give up the habit and quit smoking today thereby reduce their risk of acquiring lung Cancer," he added.

Earlier studies of the risk people face of developing lung Cancer have shown that even after as little as a year after stopping smoking, the risk of developing the disease declines, and after six to ten years, the former smoker's risk of lung cancer is nearly as low as that faced by people who had never smoked. Similarly, a decade after stopping smoking, the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease declines to the level of the nonsmokers. And obstructions in the small air passages in the lungs, which render smokers, especially susceptible to chronic bronchitis and emphysema, are also reversed after smoking has been stopped.

The new findings by Dr. Auerbach, are based on autopsy studies of bronchial tissue in 72 men who had been smokers for at least 10 years but who stopped smoking for at least five years before their deaths. The findings were compared with those in 72 men of the same age who smoked until death and 72 men who never smoked.

All 72 current cigarette smokers were found to have abnormal cells resembling cells that became cancerous in many microscopic sections of their bronchial tissue, Dr. Auerbach reported. But only half of the former smokers and a quarter of the nonsmokers had any sections with such abnormal cells. When former smokers were compared with current smokers who were as old as the former smokers were when they gave up cigarettes, Dr. Auerbach found that abnormalities in the bronchial tubes declined with time in those who stopped smoking. Not only was further damage stopped but the body was also able to repair the damage. It is therefore very important to start a quit smoking program as soon as possible.

Quit Smoking Physical Effects

Smokers who quit will likely experience quite a few unpleasant physical effects. While these can be a bit scary they will pass and are quite normal.

Most people who stop smoking experience headaches at first. They can be quite strong, but taking headache medicines like aspirin can help in most cases.

Another very common side effect is tiredness. Because the nicotine in cigarettes works as a stimulant your body needs time to learn how to function without it. It is very normal to feel weak and tired the first few days after quitting. Strangely enough trouble sleeping is also very common in smokers who quit. This is often caused by other symptoms.

Another common nicotine withdrawal symptom is the inability to concentrate. This may also be causes by low blood sugar. Because nicotine makes the body release fatty sugars into the bloodstream. This is why many smokers don´t feel hungry even when skipping a meal. When they quit smoking, but keep the old habits of skipping meals, there blood sugar will get very low, making them feel feel faint and unable to concentrate. Drinking fruit juices can help with this.

Smokers who give up cigarettes may also experience certain flu-like symptoms. These may include tightness in the chest, sore throat and coughing.

The many physical effects you experience when quitting smoking make giving up cigarettes very challenging. However when you think about the way smoking completely destroys your health you should be able to find the strength to persevere.

Smoking: Endangering Mankind

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." - Dan Quayle

If there would be a common element to each one of us that would no less than be the fact that we are all inhabitants of our world. Therefore as the stewards of mother earth, we are to take up the responsibility of preserving its natural resources and inhibiting any form of destruction thereto. It's much like an unwritten compromise that each of us has to uphold, in return for the favor that mother earth allowed us to share her paradise with us. But despondently it's to idealistic to be put to action. Much of us might not have the guts to admit without restraint, how irresponsible and apathetic each of us has been with regard to the nursing of our environment. Perhaps this could be demonstrated clearly by our mere dispensing of looking after our personal health. Since everything starts from within, how do you presume someone to be accountable for his immediate surroundings if he himself is incapable of preserving good health?

This only points out to one of the most unresolved problems in the history of the world. Contrary to our common thought that when someone is smoking he's the only one put to risk by the mere action. If you're one of the types who thinks that way perhaps you might want to consider this. Cigarette smoking and pollution are closely associated. As it is already obvious, when one engages to smoking he produces smoke, and of course recalling the grade school lectures we have had smoke is one of the most universal air pollutants all over the globe. When we say air pollution this may include chemical, physical or biological agents that alter the natural features of the atmosphere. It may hail from various sources such as power plants, burning of fossil fuels, fumes such as aerosol sprays and wildfires which produce carbon monoxide that is also present in smoke. Cigarette smoking causes pollution by the fact that the air pollution given off by cigarettes is 10 times greater as compared from diesel car exhaust. When you engage in smoking you are then a certified agent of pollution since it has been proven that environmental tobacco creates a fine particulate matter, which is a highly hazardous element of air pollution for health.

If we are to look at the wider picture of the situation we'd be able to discern the common effect of cigarette smoking and pollution to us--- to our health. So where does this place us, us the concerned citizens. Due to the fact that air pollutants have the greatest effect on our respiratory system are sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and other suspended particulates. Researches regarding adverse repercussions of air pollution are now performed so as to be able to ameliorate the air quality of which saved lives of many people and preserve public health by proper air sanitation strategies.

Quit Smoking Side Effects

There are a whole host of quit smoking side effects and not all of them are pleasant. Besides the obvious health benefits, there are also a number of side effects associated with withdrawal from nicotine. Coupled to this, if you quit smoking using a medication such as zyban or chantix, you may pick up some other drug related side effects.

The most obvious reason why people quit smoking is for the health benefits but what are they specifically?

Notably, blood pressure, heart rate and lung efficiency all improve very quickly after quitting smoking - in a matter of days. Nicotine levels and carbon monoxide levels in the blood return to natural levels with in a couple of days. These are very positive quit smoking side effects.

Smokers will also develop a much better sense of taste and their breathing may well become easier. However, one frequently reported quit smoking side effect is the amount of coughing some ex-smokers suffer from. In my own experience, I found the first six months to be a rather cough filled period of my life. It was all 'wet' as the cilia (the little hairs in you lungs) got to work clearing 20 years of tar out of my lungs! I also contracted more colds that winter than ever before but that could be for completely different reasons.

Statistical research shows circulation and lung function improve dramatically over the 10 to 15 year period after smokers quit. And quit smoking side effects are all positive in terms of improving life span with lung Cancer risk halved over 15 years and heart attack risk halved after just one year.

The side effects associated with Zyban (Wellbutrin or bupropion) and Chantix (Champix or Varenicline) can all be rather unpleasant. Personally, I do not favour the use of drugs if at all possible because I believe quitting smoking is all in your head - but that is another story!

The worst quit smoking side effect associated with Zyban is the likelihood of seizure when taken as part of a quit smoking regimen. The higher the dose the higher the risk and zyban was initially removed from the FDAs approved list after a number of seizures in patients.

Chantix has several minor side effects but in as many as 30% of smokers taking the drug, the therapy must be abandoned due to nausea and vomiting. You understand why I would advise to steer clear if at all possible!

The other quit smoking side effects aside from the positive health benefits and the negative side effects of the two most widely used drug therapies, are to do with nicotine withdrawal itself.

The list of side effects noticed when a person quits smoking is long - some are nice like the improved sense of smell and taste, some are unpleasant. There is the heightened anxiety that comes from trying to quit nicotine. People often have a much shorter temper and are irascible at the slightest thing.

Others include an inability to concentrate or to sleep sometimes compounded by other quit smoking side effects such as postnasal (back of your mouth) drip, sore throat, dry mouth and headache. An insatiable cough can be a big hindrance too!

Intestinal discomfort can also be suffered with increased flatulence, constipation, nausea and cramps being amongst some of the less pleasant side effects. It is recommended that if you are suffering from increased appetite when you quit smoking, eating more fruit and raw vegetables such as carrot or raw cauliflower and drinking plenty of fluids will help your digestion.

There are many, many more perceived quit smoking side effects and everyone suffers a different selection of the wide range - including breaking out in spots like a teenager, sweating profusely, fatigue and tingling extremities!

The downside of all of these quit smoking side effects is that whilst each one is not so bad on its own, the cumulative effect of so many negative side effects act as a trigger to break down your commitment to stop smoking. No matter what the inconvenience of the side effects, they are a small price to pay for the benefits of quitting smoking.

As ever, whatever you do and whichever method you use to quit smoking, never quit trying to quit!

Should You Continue Doing Cardio Interval Training Exercises?

A study conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service concerning health of the US population has revealed the risk factors of heart disease. The results of the study have shown that groups at the highest risk for developing heart disease are:

- men
- people older than 35 years of age
- tobacco smokers
- people suffering from high blood pressure (hypertension)
- people with high cholesterol
- all with a family history of cardiovascular disease

In addition to the mentioned risk groups, some other researchers have also shown that the risk for developing heart disease is increased in individuals with highly anxious and compulsive personality.

Heart disease risk factors can be divided into two major categories. The first category encompasses factors which are beyond control such as gender, age and genetic factors, while the risk factors from the second category - tobacco smoking, hypertension and high blood pressure called "the triple threat" can be reduced or completely avoided. The risk of heart attack is twice as high in people who smoke a pack of cigarettes a day than in nonsmokers and five times as high if smoking tobacco, suffering from hypertension, eating unhealthy diet that is high in fat content and being inadequately physically active.

Considering that the mentioned risk factors harm the heart the first step to improve heart health is obviously quit smoking and eating a healthy diet low in fat content. The second most important thing in heart health and reducing the risk of heart disease is adequate physical activity and cardio interval training.

Many studies that were conducted after the World War II have shown the importance of adequate physical activity for heart health. One of the best known studies has compared the prevalence of heart disease in 31,000 bus drivers and conductors. The study has shown that the risk of developing heart disease was significantly higher in bus drivers who spent most of the time sitting behind the wheel than in conductors who walked around the bus and climbed the stairs frequently. The link between physical activity and heart health has been also confirmed by a series of other studies that showed that the risk of heart disease is 49% higher in people who are inadequately physically than in people who exercise regularly.

Regular exercise and cardio interval training are therefore crucial for a healthy heart as well as for overall health and well-being. Adequate physical activity also increases metabolism (which helps lose weight), improves lung function and relieves stress.

Quit Smoking and Improve Your Looks

Many years of research by reputable medical bodies has shown that:

nicotine is more addictive for women
women who smoke have twice the additional risk of heart attacks, strokes and lung Cancer
lung Cancer kills three times the number of American women than breast Cancer
smoking is linked to early menopause
the aging effect of smoking on the skin is worse for women

Smoking cigarettes accelerates the aging process. And this is proven!

Here's What Smoking Does to Women

Smoking Harms Your Hair

Smokers are 4 times more likely to have these problems with their hair. The chemicals in cigarettes starve your hair of oxygen and make it dull, lifeless and brittle. Smoking can cause your hair to break off. It can cause dull, lank and smelly hair. It contributes to hair loss, greying and balding.

Smoking Ruins Your Skin

It causes premature aging of the skin and ruins your complexion. Loss of skin glow and vitality. It causes premature facial wrinkling and leathery skin. Smoking can also lead to crow's feet. Smoking causes varicose veins. Your skin develops poor healing abilities. It can cause skin cancer. Improves chances of developing psoriasis. It slows your skin's healing rate.

Smoking reduces the amount of blood flowing to the skin and dries it out. It constructs the tiny capillaries that nourish the skin. Smoking prevents oxygen and nutrients from getting to the skin. Over time, this means the skin loses elasticity and gets more wrinkled. The appearance of wrinkled, pale and grayish skin is four to five times more frequent in smokers than non-smokers. In 1971 an extensive study showed that the facial skin of long-term smokers was so terribly wrinkled that they looked as if they were 20 years older! Talk about not aging well.

Quitting smoking improves the blood supply to the skin and gives previously pale skin a more 'natural' appearance. A smoker's skin is more apt to wrinkle because the skin's vitamin A content is low compared with that for a non-smoker. vitamin A protects the skin against strong chemical substances that may damage or destroy it. Smoking also gets in the way of absorption of vitamin C - a vital antioxidant for skin protection and health By quitting, you will improve your skin tone and colour. You are less likely to get wrinkles around your eyes and mouth from squinting when smoke gets in your eyes and puckering up when you draw on a cigarette.

Tips to Improve Your Skin

The grayish color of the skin is one of the many problems caused by smoking. If you want to look fresh, "attack" the problem internally. Eat fruits rich in vitamin C and foods containing zinc. They stimulate the formation of collagen which is important for the skin. Eat wheat, oat flakes and fish - they are the main source of zinc. To replenish the lack of vitamin A, eat lettuce and carrots. Vitamin E is "responsible" for the youth of your skin. Exfoliate, get facials, use night creams, and take supplements and multivitamins. One of the best multivitamins on the market for smokers and those people who are trying to quit, is Smokers Choice(TM) MultiVitamins.

Nutritional support is a must if you are in this category. As most people know, smoking depletes levels of essential vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants from the body system. Smokers Choice(TM) is a vitamin and antioxidant supplement to address the nutritional needs of today's smokers, those who have recently quit & people exposed to secondhand smoke. Smokers Choice(TM) is specially formulated with powerful antioxidants. It has more of the ingredients shown to help your body fight the harmful effects of smoking.

And, it is designed to be safer for smokers than other products on the market. Smokers Choice(TM) is specifically designed to counteract the potential effect that smoking may have. This formula encompasses those nutrients known to be depleted by smoking and have been shown to be at very low levels in most smokers. By replacing these nutrients and adding other nutrients known to strengthen the natural immune system, you may be able to greatly reduce the risks associated with smoking. Smokers Choice(TM) contains no Beta-Carotene. Beta-Carotene has been found in multiple clinical studies to be potentially harmful to cigarette smokers. Yet, just about every multi-vitamin on the market contains Beta-Carotene. That's simply because those products are designed for non-smokers.

More Tips to Improve Your Skin

consume a daily diet of healthy food
eat many fresh vegetables and fruits
eat fish and chicken
take vitamin C daily
drink at least 1.5 liter mineral water daily
limit the alcohol and caffeine intake
exercise regularly
apply nourishing creams every day and use a night cream
your skin care products should contain retinol, vitamins and antioxidant.

Smoking Wrecks Your Teeth & Gums

Teeth Discoloration and Stains. Causes tooth decay and hot/cold sensitivity. It can cause oral or mouth cancer. It can lead to premature tooth loss and bad breath Gum disease. Smoking makes it harder for saliva to remove germs in your mouth so you have more chance of getting gum disease. Causes changes in the way you bite. Frequent bad breath. It can cause loose teeth or the gums separating from the teeth. It affects how partials and dentures fit.

Smoking and Your Lips

Smoking makes your lips dark and unattractive. The cells situated in the bottom of the epidermis are affected by smoking causing your lips to darken.

Smoking and Your Eyes

If you smoke, you risk developing cataracts and macular degeneration (deterioration of the retina of the eye resulting in the gradual loss of eyesight). This condition affects smokers nearly twice as much as non-smokers. Unfortunately, the risk of macular degeneration is only slightly reduced after giving up smoking.

If you smoke, you run an increased risk of developing cataracts. Smoking is one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness. The blood vessels in the retina are sensitive, and can be easily damaged by smoke. Smoking gives rise to a bloodshot appearance in the mucous membrane of the eye.

How Smoking Affects Your Hands

Poor circulation causing cold fingers. One cigarette can reduce the blood supply to the skin for more than an hour.

Peripheral vascular disease.

It causes either acute or chronic ischemia (lack of blood supply). Arteriosclerosis of the extremities is a disease of the blood vessels characterized by narrowing and hardening of the arteries that supply the legs and feet. This causes a decrease in blood flow that can injure nerves and other tissues.

Tar stained fingers and fingernails.

Smoking Can Alter Your Body Shape

Smoking can create an imbalance in women's hormone levels, which can lead to changes in body shape. You may have heard the saying that smokers tend to be thinner than non-smokers. However, smoking actually affects the endocrinal system - the glands that secrete hormones - and changes body shape, increasing the waist-to-hip ratio. Therefore, despite possibly weighing less, smokers tend to be pot-bellied with spindly legs, probably due to smoking upsetting the hormone levels, thus causing smokers to store the normal amount of fat in an abnormal way, which gives rise to the 'apple' shape. Quitting means your body can get back to normal and recover from the effects of smoking. Stop accelerating the aging process. Undo the damage wrought by smoking.

3. Smoking meters can help you take count of cigarettes everyday so you know how much you are smoking everyday and how much you are spending on cigarettes every day. When you reduce your cigarettes they tell you how much money you are saving by smoking less. You can use these smoking meters to keep track of your cigarettes and slowly reduce the consumption of cigarettes until you finally stop smoking for good.

4. Hypnosis helps you achieve the greater will power that is required to stop smoking and to overcome the cravings that you feel when you try to quit.
